Thoughts and observations by English poet Roger N. Taber, a retired librarian and poet-novelist.- "Ethnicity, Religion, Gender, Sexuality ... these are but parts of a whole. It is the whole that counts." RNT [NB While I have no wish to create a social network, I will always reply to critical emails about my poetry. Contact: rogertab@aol.com].

Location: London, United Kingdom

Sadly, a bad fall in 2012 has left me with a mobility problem, and being diagnosed with prostate cancer the same year hasn't helped, but I get out and about with my trusty walking stick as much as I can, take each day as it comes and try to keep looking on the bright(er) side of life. Many of my poems reflect the need to nurture a positive-thinking mindset whatever life throws at us.

Everything to Play For

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R._N._Taber

Regular readers will know I am inclined to listen in to people chatting, face to face or on their mobile phones, especially when I am in a long queue while out shopping…

1st CUSTOMER: "I was at my wits end, suicidal some days. Now it looks like there will be a vaccination for this damn coronavirus sooner rather than later … well, it feels as if a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders."

2nd CUSTOMER: "Too right. Mind you, there was always everything to play for so I just don’t understand why some people ignore safety regulations. They must lead very empty lives if they are prepared to put themselves as well as everyone else at risk."

I was not the only eavesdropper, though, as there were murmurings of agreement all round.

EVERYTHING TO PLAY FOR

World,
waking up to a wintry sky
at snowfall

Motivation,
last heard of trying to avoid
free fall

Imagination,
discarded, much like waste
in landfill

Mind,
left struggling to  get a grip
on it all

Body,
sick of trying to leap its own
prison wall

Spirit,
turning deaf ears to Freedom's
mating call

Fear,
no empty threat, sure to make
a kill

Birdsong,
bringing us a Lullaby of Hope
into nightfall

World
defying a wiser mind-body-spirit
to (ever) stall
